Big changes are coming to Mailchimp’s free plans—especially when it comes to automation. Starting June 1, 2025, Mailchimp will officially disable all Classic Automations for free accounts. That means if you’re currently running automated emails, they will be paused unless you upgrade to a paid plan.
But don’t worry—I’ve got two new options for you.

Option 1: A New (Free) Welcome Email Hack
If you’re still on Mailchimp’s free plan and just need a simple welcome email to go out automatically, this hack is for you.
Instead of using an automation, you can customize the Final Welcome Email that Mailchimp sends after someone subscribes. It’s not the full-featured email builder, but it gets the job done—and it still works on free plans (at least for now).
Here’s how to do it:
- Go to Forms > Other forms -> Form builder.
- In the dropdown menu, select Final welcome email.
- Customize:
- Use the Design tab to update colors, fonts, and logos.
- Replace the default text with your own welcome message.
- Add any links, offers, or instructions you’d normally include in a welcome automation.
This method isn’t fancy, but it’s functional and keeps your welcome message going even without a paid plan.

Option 2: Thinking About Upgrading? Get a Custom Plan from me for free
If this Mailchimp update is your sign to finally upgrade to a paid plan, I want to make sure you do it in the most cost-effective and strategic way possible.
Here’s what you need to know before you upgrade:
- Mailchimp charges you based on:
- The features you unlock (your plan type)
- Your contact tier (how many contacts you have)
- Even unsubscribed contacts count toward your contact total, so you could end up paying more than you need to.
Before upgrading, archive your unsubscribed contacts. That alone can significantly reduce your bill.
To help with this (and more), I’m offering a free custom game plan:
- I’ll take a look at your account.
- I’ll tell you exactly what to clean up first.
- I’ll show you how to take full advantage of the new features you’re unlocking.
